How to Find Your DISC Style
If you are wondering how to find your Disc style the easiest way is to take a DISC assessment or to participate in our Disc training.
About the Disc Model of Human Behavior
If you don’t want to take a DISC assessment, but you are still curious how to find your DISC style let me explain about the Disc Model of Human Behavior and the two questions you can answer to make a pretty good guess. To do this we need to look at the two ways the Disc model is divided. We call the first your motor and the other your compass.
Your Motor | Outgoing or Reserved
Your motor is simply — are you more outgoing or reserved? Someone who is more of an outgoing Disc style might be more talkative, a little more animated, and maybe a little faster paced. This is often our D or Dominant styles or our I or Inspiring styles. If someone is more reserved they might be a little more methodical or steady in their pace and maybe less talkative. The more reserved styles are S for Supportive style and C for Cautious styles. If you had to pick if you were more outgoing or reserved what would you choose? Write it down somewhere and we will come back to it.
Your Compass | Task or People
The next way the Disc model is divided is called your compass. This is simply — are you more task or people focused? This is where 90-percent of conflict can happen. Where do you find yourself gravitating to most often? Where do you land when you are in your most natural state? If you had to choose if you are more task or people focused what would you say? Our more task-focused people will be our D or Dominant style or our C or Cautious style. Our more people-focused folks will be the I or Inspiring style or S or Supportive style. Choose now if you are more task or people focused. Write that down.
Putting It All Together | How to Find Your Style
Take a look at the following and see where you think you might land as you look to find your DISC style:
- If you were more Outgoing and Task Focused: You will likely be a D or Dominant Style.
- If you chose Outgoing and People Focused: You are probably an I or Inspiring Style.
- Did you choose Reserved and Task Focused: You are likely a C or Cautious Style.
- Finally, for our Reserved and People Focused: You are likely an S or Supportive Style.
By asking those two questions and choosing appropriate responses you can determine someone’s primary personality style with about an 80-percent effectiveness rate. That simply means you have an idea of someone’s main style and where they tend to hang out. When you know this you can instantly be more effective, communicate better, and know what motivates and energizes the person in front of you. Of course, there are other great things to learn about once you find your style and the style of others, but this is a start.
